Content of Main Lesson
- Study the vertical and horizontal movements in the layers of the earth – plate tectonics
- Study the currents in the oceans and the atmosphere, from the lithosphere to the stratosphere;
- Students will draw, write, analyse, discuss, question and learn to interpret information about the atmosphere, oceans and the earth so that they can start to form informed opinions about the Earth and its climate in particular relation to the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal.
- Students will draw maps of ocean deep currents and shallow currents, air currents and their rhythms.
- They will write descriptions of the movements of the earth’s layers and study the diaries of ocean and polar explorers like Nansen and Wegener.
- They will make observations of clouds and planetary ( moon) movements and keep records of weather.
- The sunspot activity can be followed if possible and connections sought with weather patterns.
- They will draw and interpret: the series of events leading up to a change of local weather; the inside of a cyclone; the movements of the mantle molten rocks; the layers of the atmosphere.
- The diving aspect: Students will all undertake a Padi open water dive certificate which will link to the main lesson by taking the students beneath the surface and alloying them to experience ocean currents and layer first hand. Part of the certificate will involve the Physics of air and water. If we travel one way by boat there will be a further experience of the ocean and the weather in relation to the ocean.
- Artistic activity: The students will be required to work with artistic media to make drawings of marine life at different depths and also of the ocean and the clouds.
- Outcome : By the end of the block each student will have produced a book / portfolio incorporating their paintings, drawings, descriptions from the main lesson work and the discussions of the topic expressed in their own words.
