Ellen Brown
I was born in Sydney and grew up with a younger brother and sister. I had joyful schooling at Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School, which I attended from kindergarten until class ten. In class ten I received a music scholarship to study at St Andrews Cathedral School. This was a difficult change for me as I went from a Steiner school surrounded by nature and a class of 20 students to a cohort of 200 in an office block in the centre of busy Sydney city. It was nevertheless a good decision once I settled in as it allowed me to follow my passion in music and singing. After I graduated school on 2010, I spent one year working as a teacher’s assistant in two kindergarten classes at Sydney Grammar School. This helped me to realise that I wanted to pursue teaching as a career, particularly in Steiner education.
In 2012 I was reconnected with Judy Clingan and the Wayfarers whom I had met and sung with as a child. I participated in the incredible 2012 tour of Australia and the world. This tour spanned 10 months and we visited, performed and taught in schools across 18 different countries including China, Russia, Europe, India and the UK. This was an incredible year of traveling, teaching and music making and it re-affirmed my love of teaching and music performance.
Upon my return to Australia, I moved to Melbourne and completed the 2 year Advanced Diploma of Steiner Education during years 2013-14. I decided to undertake my final 4 week practicum at Abhaya in India. This was a wonderfully rich experience for me. It was great to see how the Indian mythology embodies the curriculum.
This year I am studying a bachelor of music at Monash University in Melbourne, majoring in voice. When I am not studying, I am teaching music, craft and drama. I am usually involved in Imagine music theatre workshops organised by Judy Clingan in Canberra.
I feel that education needs to be full of imagination and exploration and I feel deeply passionate about Steiner education. Hence I will continue to form my values and experience as a teacher through working in Steiner education.
